In Praise of Slow “Man born, marry, live and die … everything seems to be in a hurry; crazy is always at the side.”- William Dean Howells, 1907 The above quote is a prologue in “In Praise of Slow”, a book praising the slow rhythm in life that challenges all kind of ideas of speed. Mark Lintott never easily displays his residential designs. This normal sized house design witnessed his devotion and has a tremendous quality of living space design. But it is unthinkable that he has spent three years on it. This house stands in southern Taiwan and is typical of the landscape yet this one is different in both quality and design. Three year's hard work yields not just a structure but an attitude of the quality of life. For Mark and his client, they all appreciate this process of work – from realizing the value of the work to the perfect completion of the design to the careful monitoring of the labor on the construction site. For a typical designer, a design project is just a job that includes budget and time controls and designers are pushed hard to finish the project at the fastest speed. That anyone is willing to spend time to question the idea of design and even look at the value of space is really unthinkable. This project is unique in that both Mark and his client believed that they had to reduce their speed in both thinking and making. Only careful design ideas would enhance quality of design and awake any potential value of the design. Any surface and visible material had to reveal the deepest invisible spirituality. Mark emphasizes that a living space is not a showroom design; it echoes the deepest emotion of its dweller and contains many solutions to intriguing problems from function to detecting their psyche. A residence is a design that should never abandon the essence that links to the idea of “to be dwelled”. Mark's nightclub tactics, famous for style, could not be repeated here so he fixed on solving basic problem of living. Mutual reliance and constant dialogue between the client and himself eventually created a conscious understanding, and this slow process is how the residence takes shape. The client worked with Mark in previously and he even responsible for the construction of his own house. This unprecedented cooperation among designer, builder and client is an advantage assuring a perfect outcome. Well-built with precise detailing is a witness to this successful process. As for the design, its space is an experience of subtle delight, full of nothing but tranquility. It is like a tight chamber rejecting the clamor of the exterior world. Everything seems to be frozen in time and speed, so slow that the fresh body seems to lose momentum but relies only on instinct to live.
